Residential Heating Services in Baton Rouge: Common Home Furnace Problems

Dean Glaze • December 27, 2018

There are common problems and common fixes for just about everything. This especially true when it comes to the components that power, cool, heat, and operate your home. As these different appliances and systems work, they need some routine maintenance, however over time it’s not uncommon them to need a little extra attention. In south Louisiana we have a warm climate for a majority of the year, which means our home’s heaters sit dormant; but when winter arrives, and the temperatures drop, it’s important they are ready to work effectively and safely. So, if you’ve fired up your furnace recently and something didn’t seem exactly right, it could be one of these common problems.

Dirty Filters in Your Home’s Furnace

When your home’s furnace’s filters are dirty, it makes has to work harder. Not only will this cause higher energy costs, it can lead to extended damage to the limit switch. A clogged filter can also force frequent cycling. The furnace will constantly cycle between “on” and “off” due to improper airflow.

Electric Ignition or Pilot Control Problems

If your heater’s ignition or pilot light have become faulty it can reduce the heat that gets to your home.

Frayed or Slipped Blower Belt in Your Heater

If you notice a high-pitched squealing sound from your furnace, it is likely due to a slipped or frayed blower belt.

Flickering or Yellow Pilot Light

A yellow or flickering pilot light can be a sign of excess carbon monoxide in gas furnaces.

Excess Noise While Your Furnace Runs

If you hear rumbling, rattles, squeaking, or other noises coming while your home’s heater is on, you have an issue. Excess noise indicates that there is a mechanical problem, airflow restriction, or a clogged burner.

While routine maintenance and preseason heater checks can mitigate most of these issues, it’s important that you address these and any other problems as soon as possible. The experts at Glaze Heating and Air are here for your residential heating needs.
