Baton Rouge Heater Service: Preparing Your Home’s Heater for Cold Weather
Cold weather doesn’t visit south Louisiana very often, or for very long, but when it does your home’s heater needs to be ready to perform. Your furnace system keeps your house warm and comfortable, and if it isn’t ready after a long summer of high temperatures, it can be unsafe. So how can you make sure your heater is in good, safe shape to keep your home and family warm and protected this fall and winter? Here are few tips for ensuring that your furnace is ready for that first cold snap.
Replace Your Filter
The air filter for your furnace should be replaced each month. You should also consider upgrading your filter to a HEPA filter or electrostatic filter. These will make your home more energy efficient and enhance the flow of warm air.
Clean Your Air Vents and Ducts
Dust and other debris can accumulate over time. Simply unscrew your vent covers and use your vacuum’s hose to clean them out.
Inspect the Furnace’s Blower Belt for Cracks
After turning off the power to your furnace from the circuit, remove the cover of the air handler. The largest rubber belt is the blower belt. Inspect it for cracks or damage, and if anything is found, replace it.
Check Your Outdoor Exhaust Flue
Be sure to inspect your exhaust flue for any debris like sticks, leaves, or animal nests.
Schedule a Pre-Season Heater Inspection
The best thing to do during this time of the year is to let the professionals inspect your home’s heating system. Even after you’ve done some of the basics mentioned above, having your furnace serviced before the cold air really sets will ensure that it works when and how you need it.
