Livingston Parish Air Conditioning Company: Solving Common A/C Issues

Dean Glaze • March 26, 2018

A summer day in South Louisiana without air conditioning can feel like an eternity. Air conditioners drive the heat out of your home and circulate cool air, making it much more pleasant to be inside. Like any other appliance, your air conditioning unit is subject to malfunction. It can happen suddenly and with minimal warning. Luckily, there are several problems that can be inexpensive, simple, and take little time to diagnose and fix. Learning how to resolve these issues can save you money and time.

Most Common Issues with A/C Units

  • Faulty wiring/breakers- Sometimes it’s just that simple. Open your breaker box to make sure that your fuses are not burned out and that the switches are on.Replacement fuses are very cheap and simple to install. Wiring can be a little tricky. If you notice a loose, frayed or damaged wire, it is best to leave that alone if you are not experienced with the matter. A mistake can cause electrocution, fire, or further damage to the unit.
  • Changing the filters- Filters can be found just about anywhere. Simply take the old filter out to find out what dimensions you need and buy a new one from a variety of different stores. They get dirty over time and are recommended to be changed often. As dirt, animal fur, and dust collect in the filter, the amount of airflow needed to keep the unit running at optimal efficiency is reduced. This will cause the coils on your unit to freeze, preventing cool air from being circulated.
  • Refrigerant leaks- Also called Freeon, this is the chemical that is needed to cool air and keep your unit running. Many cases of low Freeon are caused by leaks which require immediate repair. Replacing the Freeon alone is expensive, so you want to make sure that the leak is fixed beforehand. This is another one that is better left to the pros.
  • Outside fan is not working- the fan on your outside unit pull the hot air from inside your house. These fans may experience wear and tear over the years or have debris getting stuck in them. If you notice that the fan is not spinning, it could be as simple as removing any debris that may be caught.

Do Not Attempt Repairs that are Outside of Your Ability

Sure, the guys on Youtube make all these repairs seem easy, and while there are tons of great how-to videos with useful information, these are often made by professionals. If there is problem that you aren’t sure about repairing, it’s best to leave it to the professionals at Glaze Heating and Air.Allowing a professional to run a diagnostics test on your unit can determine precisely what the problem is and what appropriate quality repairs need to be made.
